Privately owned e-scooters cannot currently be ridden on public roads, pavements, cycle lanes or in other public places in England. No. Having a driving licence does not permit public use of a privately owned e-scooter. Approved rental trials have their own licence requirements and operator-provided insurance. Do not confuse those trial rules with the rules for a scooter you buy. Check the official rules.

Range varies with the model, temperature, rider weight, speed, hills and tyre pressure. Cold weather can reduce range, so advertised maximum range should not be treated as a winter guarantee. Check the model’s specifications and manual, allow a reserve and avoid icy conditions.

Charging times and permitted charging temperatures vary by model. Follow the manual and use only a charger approved by the manufacturer for that battery. Do not charge a wet, damaged or excessively cold battery. Charge while you are present, in a suitable location away from escape routes. Check that the supplied charger is suitable for your local mains socket.

Water resistance depends on the exact model. Check its IP rating and manufacturer’s instructions; water-resistant does not mean waterproof. Avoid puddles, immersion and pressure washing. Allow the vehicle and charging port to dry before charging and follow the manual’s wet-weather advice.

Check the rules of every operator on your journey before travelling. Transport for London does not allow e-scooters on its services, even when folded. Other train and bus operators set their own carriage rules; a folding mechanism does not guarantee acceptance. Read TfL’s current rules.
